The concept of ‘art-caves’ is rooted in interdisciplinary approach that brings together art, architecture, nature, and related disciplines into a unified spatial experience. Developed and presented by Sherrard Fonseka, this concept reimagines the relationship between built form and the natural environment, creating immersive spaces that blur the boundaries between art and habitat.

The origins of this approach can be traced to the United Kingdom, where Sherrard’s engagement with interdisciplinary studies began at a time when such explorations were still emerging. He completed his master’s degree, in Canterbury, Kent, focused on an innovative art and architecture program that laid the conceptual and intellectual foundation for his current work.

‘art-caves’ emerged from his interdisciplinary practice—a creative synthesis of art and architecture—which he has continued to cultivate and refined over time. This journey began with his graduation in Kent and has since evolved alongside his primary profession in architecture.

While the roots of his fine art practice can be traced to his early training in Cyprus at the College of Art, the foundation of his architectural practice was shaped through his professional experience at two chartered architectural firms in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
